Reptiles are in all probability the most unfairly treated, and most illogically hated wild animals on our planet. Of the two thousand odd kinds of reptiles that exist, only twenty are poisonous. Both men and women have an uncontrollable fear of these creatures that goes back for thousands of years. It probably was born like an instinct for survival, when there wasnt a manner of safely finding out if a snake was poisonous or the non-poisonous variety. However, if the snake feels cornered, or finding no place to conceal itself, it will try to bite you, more as a warning to stop approaching than to actually do any damage.

Non-poisonous snakes are normally really safe to handle, especially pet snakes and reptiles that are habituated to being picked up. Even the species of snakes in the wild that are non-poisonous are quite able to be handled without fear of being bitten (the exception being water snakes and other kinds which are naturally aggressive). If you do need to pick up a reptile, take your time to move leisurely, and slide your hand under the belly of the snake near the tail part. If you move rapidly, or from above, it may think you are a hunter. After you succeed in lifting the snake and are holding it, dont hold it by the tail, just support it loosely with both hands (grip loosely but firmly, if you squeeze too hard it might damage it), and let the snake explore its way around arms and hands. If the reptile feels agitated, or goes into a strike position, it is best to slowly, but gently replace the snake in its box.

You will find that reptiles are not slimy or nasty in any way. That said, if they are afraid, they may poop on you as a way of showing fear. If this happens, be sure to bathe the area very well with soap and hot water, as snakes sometimes have the bacteria of salmonella in their feces. Bear in mind that snakes, no doubt beautiful and interesting to behold, simply arent the most intelligent creatures in the world, having about the same intelligence as a goldfish. Remember when you are holding a your pet that it possible perceives you as a very unusual tree, and does not recognize you as a human. Snakes react by instinct rather than thinking, and keeping this in mind, handling snakes is very easy to do, in addition to being fascinating.

How can you tell venomous and non-venomous snakes apart? There are several ways to do this, although some species of harmless reptiles have adapted to be able to look like venomous snakes when they become scared. If you have any doubts, treat it with care!
