What Do Lizards Eat

Iguanas
by christophedemulder

What do Lizards Eat?

When most people think of lizards and what they eat, the only thing they can think of is insects. But in reality there are quite a few other things that lizards will eat. Depending on the species of lizard and the naturally available prey, the diet of many lizards varies a lot.

It is true that the vast majority of lizards feed on insects and bugs. Anoles, Geckos, Chameleons and Skinks are very popular lizards in the pet trade and feed almost exclusively on insects. Some species like the Chinese Water Dragon will feed on both insects and plants. Chinese Water Dragons will eat crickets and small bugs while also eating fruits and vegetables.

Iguanas are one of the most popular pet lizards. Their diet is made up almost entirely of plants. Broccoli, lettuce, parsley, oranges, strawberries and black berries are very important for proper health of these lizards. Iguanas do not eat insects or any meat. Iguanas come from warm tropical areas where fruits and vegetables are common so they have adapted to eat the most commonly available food. Most Iguanas are arboreal which makes eating fruit an advantage where they don?t have to get on the ground where predators are found.

Larger species of lizard feed on meat. Most of the monitor species will eat rodents. The Savannah monitor which can reach 5 feet in length will eat small rodents, large insects and anything else it can catch and fit into it?s mouth. As babies they eat insect and worms. After they obtain a foot in length or more they will start to eat rodents, birds, and eggs. Adults eat the same things that juveniles do except they eat larger amounts. Some monitor species have been known to eat snakes and turtles.

The largest species of lizards the Komodo Dragon will eat anything it can catch and kill. Komodo Dragons will attack a buffalo. The poison inside the saliva of a Komodo dragon will infect the buffalo. Komodo Dragons are not poisonous but the saliva is full of bacteria and will kill you if you do not get medical help.. After several days the buffalo will become weak and die. The Komodo dragon will then eat the buffalo without much effort. The only effort that is required is fighting off other Komodo dragons. Humans are on the list of prey for Komodo Dragons. It is unlikely that a human is killed by a Komodo Dragon, but it has happened.

Review La Iguana

Review: La Iguana – Best Mexican Restaurant in Branson, Missouri

Branson, Misssouri has no shortage of interesting restaurants and we have probably a dozen or so Mexican restaurants.

Most of them are about the same… but, among the best of those are:

Elenita’s (Hollister restaurant is nicer than the Branson location and only one exit south of the strip – nice selection of Mexican beer there);

Cantina Laredo on the Branson Landing (near the fountains, fantastic selection of Tequila makes their Margaritas the best in town!);

El Portal (interesting spices in their sauces makes them a stand out); and

Las Fuentes (an old stand-by, the family has been around for a while with their distinctive recipes… unfortunately their little building is getting a little run down. But, the food is still good.)

But, there is a new and exciting restaurant in town that beats them all by miles (…even Cantina Laredo!).

It’s La Iguana located on the west end of “the Strip” (76 Country Blvd.) where you will also find most of the famous Branson theatres. La Iguana is conveniently located on the north side of the road in a little strip mall – easy in and easy out, even in heavy Branson traffic.

What makes La Iguana a stand out – the first thing, that is – is the quality of the food. Everything is fresh. Even the sauces (I hate tartar sauce – but they make their own and it’s actually good!) are freshly made by top notch authentic Mexican chefs. Hot sauces range from pretty hot to gringo mild. They take great care with each of their recipes.

They offer tacos, tostadas (topped with lettuce and avacado) burritos and more.

Carne Asada (steak seasoned to perfection) Morelia style
Pollo Salsa Roja (Chicken red salsa)
Al Pastor
Carnitas (Michoacan style)
Pescado (Fish taco) Ensanada Style
Camaron (shrimp) San Felipe style

This is just the beginning… they offer a selection of Mexican sodas and a wonderful beverage called “horchata” that is a kind of rice milk with cinnamon and other spices.

The offer entire plates as well and do quite a lot of take out business. But, I think if you visit once, you will enjoy the food and the entire environment of this little restaurant that you will soon be back – not only for the food, but for the warmth and friendly smiles.

If you stay for long, you may find yourself chatting with the friendly staff who will trade stories with you about travel and art. These people really know how to enjoy food and life!

This restaurant has an almost European feel to it. Each little table is neatly decked in red and the walls display two stunningly beautiful posters of the owners’ native city in Mexico.

There is yet another reason that you will want to visit La Iguana again and again. The price is right. This is probably one of the least expensive dining experiences in town… especially given the quality of the entire experience.

So, if you are in Branson or plan to visit soon, please stop by La Iguana and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed. This is the best Mexican food I’ve had since the last time I was in Mexico!

You’ll find La Iguana online at www.laiguanatacosandburritos.com or in person at:

Interesting Facts About Cheetah

Interesting facts about Cheetah and its habitat

While lion is the king of the forest, cheetah is known for its chic and graceful nature. Though cheetah is smaller than lion, it’s the fastest mammal on land, as it can run at a speed of 60 miles per hour, which is relatively 100 kilometers per hour for covering a short distance. These big cats are termed the most endangered feline species in some regions of Africa.

Cheetah’s ability to run faster than other animals has attracted attention in commercial advertisements related to motorcycles and cars. To draw a comparison between a Cheetah and a motorcycle is not very difficult, but it really helps companies promote their high-speed motorcycles or cars among the speed-crazy youth of the world.

Cheetahs can run fast because of its flexible spine, which allows its front legs to stretch forward, while making it easy to breathe.

Some other notable features that help cheetahs while running are, light body weight, semi-retractable claws and a relatively short tail. It’s quite an amazing fact to know that Cheetah’s feet will be in air most of the time when it runs. When they are running, they will cover about six meters in one stride, though most sprints last no longer than 30 seconds.

As these daylight hunters have distinctive spots on their body that blend easily with grass and shrubs in the forest, they will hide behind grass and wait for its prey. They usually hunt small to medium size antelopes, birds, rabbits, porcupines, ostriches etc. Many documentaries on cheetahs have been filmed in East Africa where animals are easy to observe on the plain grounds. I used to watch shows related to cheetah on my LED television powered by Dish TV. I still remember a television program where they showed the hunting habits of cheetahs, like running behind a prey, catching it, then knocking it on the ground and suffocating the animal by biting its throat. Though they are good hunters, their ability to guard the hunt is very low, because we often see them driven off by leopards, lions or hyenas.

We can find cheetahs mostly in the grasslands of East Africa. Namibia, the Southwestern part of Africa, is considered home to one of the largest populations of cheetah in all over Africa. Mostly they prefer to live in semi-desert regions where there is thick bush and lots of open and plain land. However, they also live in a variety of different habitats like savannahs and mountains.

Cheetahs always like to be alone, except during breeding season. When females attain maturity at two to three years, males attain adulthood at three years. Mating can take place mostly during rainy season, that’s between the months of November and May. Cheetahs give birth to one to six cubs at a time and these cubs stay with their mothers until they are 12 to 20 months old. Cheetah mothers are very patient, so they spend a long time to teach their cubs how to hunt a live antelope. Just like lions they won’t roar, but they will growl, purr and hiss.

Many people have confusion between a cheetah and a leopard. But we can differentiate them just from their appearance. Leopards are bulkier and stronger, while cheetahs are lighter and taller. Moreover, leopards like to drag their hunt high up on the trees, while cheetahs hardly climb trees due to its non-retractable claws.

Cheetahs have a life span of 10 to 12 years, but its general habitat is being destroyed by humans. Cheetah hunting was a popular hobby in the past and their population has fallen to half its number since 1969. Now it is estimated that nearly five thousand to twelve thousand animals are left in the wild. Though there are stringent laws and bans on killing wild animals in many countries, cheetahs are still considered vulnerable to illegal hunters and considered an endangered species. It is high time that we took some measures that would help to save these amicable animals.

Ann is a freelance writer and she is interested in knowing more about wildlife. To get information related to animals and their habitat, she regularly watches programs related to that on her television powered by Dish TV.
